Micro-ATX boards are about three” shorter than a normal ATX board.
HP, Dell, eMachine and all the other crappy “brand name” PC’s use micro-ATX since they’re less costly and smaller sized (smaller implies it can fit into a cheaper and smaller situation, conserving them even much more money).
Top of the line motherboards are constantly ATX.
Micro-ATX are good for HTPC’s (property theater PC’s)

I agree with Izzy S. The vast majority of micro atx boards are not worth getting. My experience is that they can not be upgraded very much, if at all.
(there are: old AT, ATX, micro-ATX and, if you’re really really snooping around, you can find mini-ATX)
The url i’ve copied and pasted is fairly old, but it’s pretty much on-target even today.
Don’t forget the not often used BTX.
