NOTE: If your computer is still under warrenty, this will void your warrenty. Do some research. Some of the CR2032′s are proprietary and set into a rubber mold with lead wires you actually pluc into the motherboard. If your computer uses a standard CR2032, you will be good.
What you will need:
An anti-static surface
An anti-static wrist band (grounded)
A small Phillips Screw driver
A small Flat head screw driver
A pack of index cards
Since I don’t know the PC in which you’re referring to, this is what I do when I come across a laptop I am unfamiliar with.
First and foremost, TAKE YOUR TIME. Make sure that anything you take apart, you can put back together. NEVER EVER EVER force anything. You risk breaking and snapping things that may be important in the long run.
The index cards are for your screws. What I do, is I punch the screws through the card, and use one card for similar sets of screws, being sure to mark where they came from if I have to. For instance, I’ll have one card for the Bottom of the laptop, and another for the sides and top, and so on and so forth. Also, durring disassembly, keep an eye out for the round CR2032 battery.
Take out the battery and make sure it’s unplugged. Take out your CD ROM drive at this time if it can be done externally.
I usually start with removing the “easy access” panels, and their contents. These contain the sticks of RAM, and the Hard Drive usually. It does very from computer to computer.
Then, I take out all the scews in the bottom and/or sides. Take your time, make sure you get each and every one. If your display has hinge covers, take them off gently, and there is one to three screws under each hinge cover.
Next, flip the PC over, and remove the keyboard. Typically, along the top of the keyboard, you will see a small indent. Take your flathead, and pry it up. You will hear a lot of popping, be gental, but firm. Also, be observant as to any flat ribbon-cables that might be attatched to this piece. Most laptops have none, but a few do, so watch it.
The keyboard slides up, and pulls out. There IS a ribbon cable here, so be gental, and remember where it goes (mark it on an index card if you have to.
Notice that there are wires coming from the display. One is for the video feed, and the smaller White, Black (and possibly) Grey wires are for your WiFi antenna. Follow those to their sources, and CAREFULLY disconnect them and unroute the wires. The Display should be able to be lifted and separated from the base of the computer at this point. If it doesn’t lift easy, check to ensure ALL screws have been removed (there may be a few in the palmrest itself).
Next, there are screws in the palm rest. Take out any that you see. Also, if your CD ROM is internal, this is where you remove it. At this point, I begin separating the bottom plastic (Bottom) from the palm rest (top) and, VERY gently keeping track of where all the ribbon cables connect. These control your power, your mouse, etc so it is vital that each and every one gets put back wher eyou found it. Also, if the palmrest resists too much, stop, take your time, and see if there is a screw you missed. It happens a lot, so no worries.
After the palm rest is removed, you should have clear access to the top of the motherboard. Scan for the CR2032 (if you haven’t found it already). If it’s not there, then it’s on the bottom side of the motherboard.
What you will need to do now, is remove all those cables you see plugged into the motherboard and remove the screws attatching it to the bottom plastic (or palm rest in some cases) VERY carefully remove the board and flip it over to access the bottom side.
Do the steps in reverse to assemble it again. Be VERY careful when plugging in the wifi antennas, they are tiny, sometimes frustrating and will bend if you froce them…
When you assembled your computer, doublechecking that you put EVERYTHING back in its place… start up your system, go into the BIOS and reconfigure it to your desired settings.
